Who should measure the level of biosecurity at a farm ?

    #2387

Do you think that the farmer will learn more if he makes a self assesment or if his vet or techncian makes the assessment ? Or should the assessment be made by a neutral and external person ?

There are several systems available to measure biosecurity (eg Biocheck.ugent) that can be used freely by anybody who wants to use it. So the system can be used equally by the farmers as well as the vets or other technicians. Yet my experience learns me that it is quite seldom that farmers use the system on their own without any support /help from a third party. In most cases, it is therefore a veterinarian or animal health technician who is doing the biosecurity scoring in collaboration with the farmer. In that way, the farmer has a partner to work together with and most importantly to discuss the outcome of the biosecurity evaluation together.
